Electric Toothbrushes: Not Your Mom’s Toothbrush

Brushing your teeth is probably one of the most important (and socially required) things you can do for your oral health. It’s what helps remove plaque buildup that can cause damage to your enamel. It helps with killing bacteria that can cause gingivitis and bad breath. And it can help with keeping your teeth pearly white and pretty for when you flash your smile at the cutie sitting next to you at the bar...or burger shack. (Whatever floats your boat.) Point is, brushing your teeth is vital to your health, happiness, and people wanting to be around you. So now the question becomes, what is the best method to go about brushing your teeth? Obviously we know it’s not the 3000 BC ancient old way of chewing sticks (albeit they were effective in their time). And while our manual toothbrushes have come a long way since their invention in 1938, one can ask if it’s still the best method. Well, we’ve asked, and the professionals (aka dentists) have answered.

A majority of dentists would say that while they still believe a manual soft bristle toothbrush is effective at getting rid of plaque the better option would be to use an electric toothbrush. There are many reasons as to why, however the main reason is because many people who use manual toothbrushes have a tendency to brush their teeth too hard and vigorously which leads to damage of the tooth enamel and receding gums, which neither can be reversed. When you use an electric toothbrush this is taken out of the equation because it's the brush that is doing the work and is made to apply more gentle pressure on the gums, while actually being more effective at removing plaque.

Which brings us to our second reason as to why a majority of dentists (including our own) would recommend using an electric toothbrush. Simply for the fact that it’s, as we just stated, is more effective at removing plaque (safely) than manual brushing. It also can assist people in brushing for the proper amount of time as many electric toothbrushes today have a timer built in which signals the person to go to the next zone of their mouth, assuring that they brush for the prescribed time of two minutes.

Now as to which electric toothbrush is the best, that is where the debate truly lies. Many dentists would say that as long as it is a reputable brand you can’t really go wrong with any choice. And choices you have. Not only can you go to almost any grocery, department, or drugstore and find high quality electric toothbrushes, but there are also online clubs and subscription based companies that offer quality brushes that will ship replacement heads and even floss and toothpaste directly to your door.

So really the choice is up to you. If you desire quick and easy access, go to your local store and see the options they have in stock. (Maybe talk to your dentist about brands they would recommend). Or, if you’re a fan of ongoing convenience you can subscribe to an online company and have everything shipped to your door when you need it. The world of electric toothbrushes is now your oyster!
